Gabriel Agbonlahor has been placed on his own personal fitness programme at Aston Villa.
Agbonlahor has been put on a personal fitness regime, as Villa look to ensure he gets back to peak physical condition before the end of the campaign.
The 29-year-old has not been in good form this season, and his fitness as not as strong as it once was.
Wilkins, who was Villa assistant at the start of the campaign, claims that he saw the warning signs about the direction that Agbonlahor’s career was heading early on.
However, he says that when he spoke to Agbonlahor about the issue, the striker was confrontational.
“I had words with Gabby when I was there about his physical condition,” Wilkins said.
“He said to me that he could get his own physical condition in nick, and for me not to worry about it. [It was] in a controversial manner and I thought at the time that ‘we need you’ but obviously my words fell on deaf ears.”
Agbonlahor has been one of Villa’s biggest underachievers this season, as the club have slipped out of the Premier League.
The Claret and Blues have won just three league matches all campaign, and their performances have been dire.
Agbonlahor has played 18 times for Villa this season, but he has only scored once and it seems unlikely that he will feature again before the end of the campaign.
