Everton boss Roberto Martinez must play two up front v Manchester United

Barkley, Lukaku, Barry

Romelu Lukaku is crying out for a strike partner.

Everton were thrashed in the Merseyside derby last night and now fans of the club are hoping to see the back of Roberto Martinez ahead of the FA Cup semi-final v Manchester United on Saturday.

Of course that looks very unlikely.

So what do Everton need to do in this game?

First of all, they will need to address the centre-back issue. John Stones will hopefully recover from his illness for the game but Ramiro Funes Mori is suspended and Phil Jagielka injured. Mo Besic looks likely to step in.

But what Everton should consider for the game is playing with two up front.

The team’s biggest weapon is Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian striker is one of the best in the world right now but at the moment he is left isolated, alone and disheartened as a lone striker.

Ross Barkley is struggling to get near him at the moment and Everton should consider giving Oumar Niasse a shot or bringing Arouna Kone back into the fold.

Martinez really has very little to lose now. Confidence in him is at an all-time low and he may as well throw in a surprise to keep United guessing. Get two men up front and balls whipped in from Leighton Baines and Gerard Deulofeu all evening long and Everton might fluke their way through this one.

It’s time for Roberto to go old school, at least for one game, as the current method is simply not working.
