Arsenal fans and neutrals react to Mesut Ozil's PFA Team of the Year snub

The German playmaker was nominated for Player of the Year yet excluded from the best top-flight XI.

As if Arsenal's season hadn't already caused enough to grumble about for the club's fans, they were given another cause for frustration on Thursday as the PFA announced its Premier League team of the year.

Though Hector Bellerin was rewarded for his fine season at right-back, there was no place in a midfield dominated by Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City players for the man who has arguably been the Gunners best player this season.

Mesut Ozil has recorded a league-leading 18 assists from 31 appearances this season, adding six goals of his own , and has been the driving force behind the club's attacking play.

Dimitri Payet MF West Ham 27 9 9 10 42.63 67.85 2,311

As can be seen from the table above, the German set up twice as many goals as fellow Player of the Year nominees and Team of the Year inclusions Dele Alli and Dimitri Payet, and has created almost three times as many big chances for his teammates.

However, he has failed to replicate the form of the first half of the season in recent weeks, and that has been a factor in Arsenal's inability to sustain their title challenge, with Arsene Wenger's team having fallen by the wayside over the last two months.

However, Arsenal fans clearly don't feel as though that should stop the star man being named in the PFA XI alongside Bellerin, and they made their feelings known in no uncertain terms on Twitter.

Meanwhile, for non-Gunners there was plenty of fun to be poked at the World Cup-winner's exclusion.
