Dortmund respond to Ilkay Gundogan to Manchester City transfer rumours

The club’s manager has played down reports of a possible move to the Premier League giants.

Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel has refused to confirm rumours linking Ilkay Gundogan with a move to Manchester City, reports Sky Germany.

Reports in the Sun last week stated the central midfielder was expected to sign a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium after completing a £30 million move.

However, head coach Tuchel has hit out at those reports, stating it was up to Dortmund - and not the media - to announce any possible move.

Gundogan, 25, is a key cog in the Bundesliga team’s engine. Utilised in the centre of the field, the Germany international is a box-to-box midfielder. Tuchel has opted to use the former Nurnberg star in a deeper role this campaign to control the play and help maintain possession.

Manchester City will be attracted to his ability to control the tempo of matches, with his energetic style perfectly suited to Dortmund’s counter-attacking tactics. After reports linking him with a move to the Premier League resurfaced last week, Tuchel was coy over the story.

"I can't confirm the transfer," Tuchel is quoted as saying to Sky Germany. "And shouldn't it be the other way round? We have to announce it."

Meanwhile, injured defender Neven Subotic also had his say on the matter and responded to questioning by replying: “I do not read newspapers so this is the first time I’ve heard of it”
