Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have shared a joke about Newcastle United’s current situation on social media site Twitter.
Shearer was tweeted by Lineker after the news that he had extended his contract as a BBC pundit was announced, with the Match of the Day presenter suggesting that viewers would now have to put up with more rants about Newcastle.
Blimey, another 4 years of Newcastle rants! https://t.co/T69KMBzzRZ— Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) April 20, 2016
However, the Magpies legend could not resist the opportunity to show some gallows humour, by stating that it was optimistic to suggest that he would have the opportunity to do so.
Newcastle are currently battling against the drop in the Premier League, and their top flight status is in serous jeopardy.
The Tynesiders have been in a relegation battle for much of the season, and they still sit in 19th place with just four games remaining.
Newcastle do have more hope of surviving now than they did two weeks ago, though.
Rafael Benitez’s side have collected four points from their last two matches to close the gap on Norwich City.
Newcastle’s next match comes against Liverpool at Anfield, and if they are able to get the win they would move out of the drop zone.
