Derby County have had a season full of ups and downs this campaign, but they finally gave themselves something to shout about by guaranteeing a spot in the play-offs at the end of the season with a 3-2 win at Bristol City on Tuesday night.

Knowing that a victory would secure their place in the top six if Cardiff City failed to beat Brentford, the Rams took the lead after an edgy start when Johnny Russell headed home from close range.

That advantage lasted barely a minute as Jonathan Kodjia beat Scott Carson for the leveller, and the game was turned on its head just a minute before the break as Bobby Reid pounced on Richard Keogh's poor headed clearance and beat Carson from distance.

However, Darran Wassall's side responded well after half-time and hauled themselves level again thanks to Craig Bryson, before Tom Ince's finish saw Derby complete a turnaround of their own in a topsy-turvy contest.

That win proved to be enough to seal a spot in the play-offs thanks to Cardiff's defeat at Brentford, and helped them go some way to banishing the ghosts of last season's dreadful late-season collapse.

Wassall and his players now have three remaining league games to gear themselves up for another play-off campaign as they look to go one better than two years ago, when they suffered a heartbreaking last-minute defeat to QPR in the final at Wembley.

After the match, some of Derby's players took to Twitter to express their pride at the victory and the achievement of reaching the play-offs again.
