Dembele cannot understand why Alderweireld is not shortlisted for Player of the Year

The Tottenham Hotspur defender has been superb this season.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele has been speaking to the London Evening Standard about his teammate Toby Alderweireld.

The centre-back arrived at White Hart Lane from Atletico Madrid last summer and he quickly settled in the heart of Tottenham’s defence, forming a wonderful partnership first with countryman Jan Vertonghen and later with fellow new arrival Kevin Wimmer.

In fact, such have been Alderweireld’s performances that Dembele feels he should have made the shortlist for the PFA’s Player of the Year award.

“He is an amazing player and he is very important for us,” Dembele said of his fellow Belgian. “I don’t know how it happens (his omission from the shortlist) and it’s not my concern but to me he deserves it.”

Alderweireld has played 45 matches for Tottenham this season and as well as having a vital role at the back he has also played his part at the opposite end of the field, scoring four goals and providing two assists to date.

His latest strike came in the 3-0 victory against Manchester United earlier this month and after Tottenham followed that up with a 4-0 win against Stoke City they are still very much in with a shout of claiming their first Premier League title.
