The striker has been suspended by the club because of his off-field antics.
Aston Villa’s struggles finally came to a head at the weekend as they were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United and therefore relegated to the Championship.
That has seen plenty of criticism for the club, in particular for their striker Gabby Agbonlahor.
The former Englnd international has found himself in hot water recently for his off-field antics and is currently suspended by the club.
He has become an easy scapegoat but one former Villa striker has made it clear that blaming Agbonlahor will get Villa nowhere.
“When you get relegated and you’re losing and you are a big club everybody looks at everything. The finger gets pointed at everybody and every little thing matters and people go looking for things.
“I wouldn’t single out anybody I just think over a period of four or five years there’s been a lack of investment into the team with top players. If you’re going to get top players you’ve got to spend.”
Saunders is right to point out the fact that blaming Agbonlahor will get Villa nowhere.
The problems at Villa are from the top down and, starting with a new manager, the decision making at the club needs to be better if they are to return to the Premier League.
Agbonlahor is an easy target at the moment but the bigger picture is much more than just one out of shape striker.
