Could Leeds United defender Gaetano Berardi be heading to Euro 2016 with Switzerland?

The defender will be hoping to travel to France this summer.

Leeds United will have a representative at Euro 2016 this summer.

Wide man Stuart Dallas is set to be a starter for Northern Ireland at the Euros this summer and will be hoping to continue the miracle with his country.

But could another Leeds player be heading to France this summer?

No, not Giuseppe Bellusci, but Gaetano Berardi.

The full-back has potentially been Leeds’ player of the season. If he hadn’t have suffered with injury earlier in the campaign, he might have sewn up the accolade.

He is remarkably consistent and capable of playing both at right-back and left-back.

So could he be on his way to the Euros with Switzerland?

Berardi already has one cap for Switzerland, featuring whilst a Brescia player against Liechtenstein in August 2011.

He has not featured since but must be in the reckoning.

Right-back options for Switzerland are limited. Of course the national captain Stephan Lichtsteiner will be in the squad and Michael Lang of FC Basel is the likely second choice.

Left-back is also sorted, with Ricardo Rodriguez of Wolfsburg an undoubted starter. But Berardi would certainly be a good option as a back-up full-back for Switzerland. His versatility makes him ideal for a tournament squad and Leeds would be proud to see him earn a Swiss recall.

It looks unlikely, but Berardi could be one injury away from making the Switzerland squad.
