Mesut Ozil has experienced a superb individual campaign.
The German international has an abundance of ability and everyone knew how dangerous he was upon his arrival at the Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid for a club record fee in 2013.
But it was not until this season that he finally produced the goods on a consistent basis, scoring six goals and adding a whopping 18 assists in 31 Premier League starts.
Mertesacker feels his compatriot is the difference between 30-plus points over a season, and urges him to work on positioning and movement as defenders wise up to his threat.
“When he fulfils his potential, he has 20-plus assists in him and has even got the ability of scoring 10-plus goals. When he can be difference between 30-plus points, it is vital for the team,” Mertesacker told the club’s official website.
“I think he realises he can now grow here, even in a foreign country. He gets the respect now and it is going to be even tougher for him. Everyone tries to block his left foot because he is so dangerous with it.
“Now he needs to find different spots and positions where he can find solutions but I’m convinced he can take this challenge to be at his best and the player we need him to be.”
Ozil has experienced his best campaign since joining the club, yet the team has suffered somewhat this season and find themselves out of the running for the Premier League title already.
While the former Werder Bremen man has excelled, others such as Olivier Giroud, Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott have been too inconsistent and as a result the club have dropped too many points.
With the Premier League set to become even stronger next season with the addition of managers Pep Guardiola and Antonio Conte, the Gunners will need Ozil to perform at his best yet again.
