The defender has come in for criticism for his display in the last two games.
The defender has come in to the Gunners first team in recent weeks, replacing Per Mertesacker as Laurent Koscielny’s central defensive partner.
He has come in for criticism in his last two games though with a torrid display against Andy Carroll in the 3-3 draw with West Ham in particular earning him the ire of Arsenal fans.
Many believe he is not up to the standard required for the club to be serious challengers, and Carragher is among them, saying he is a squad player at best.
“He’s been there for a season now,” he told Monday Night Football.
“I still don’t think he’s done enough to convince he’s the centre back that Arsenal need to take them forward. He still looks a squad player for me, if I’m being totally honest, and it’s still an area they need to rectify in the summer.”
The debate about Gabriel is certainly an interesting one, with the Brazilian having proved a divisive figure with his performances.
However, there are arguably other areas of the team that are in more dire need of improvement at the club, with a world-class striker top of many Arsenal fans lists.
If the side are to improve, that will likely be the area they focus on first, meaning Gunners may fans have to put up with Gabriel as a first team regular for the foreseeable future.
