Gallery: Impressive Newcastle earn potentially crucial point against Manchester City

Vurnon Anita's superb equaliser and a fine display from goalkeeper Karl Darlow saw the Magpies hold City to a 1-1 draw at St. James' Park.

Newcastle United closed the gap on Norwich City and safety with by earning a potentially crucial point from their game in hand against Manchester City at St. James' Park on Tuesday night.

The home side came flying out of the blocks in the early stages but were hit with what could easily have been a sucker punch when Sergio Aguero was afforded a free header from Aleksandar Kolarov's free-kick, with the striker looking to be in an offside position when he nodded past Karl Darlow.

However, far from being crushed by that blow, the Magpies responded superbly and equalised after half an hour through a superbly-taken Vurnon Anita goal, the Dutchman cutting back from the left and curling in off the far post to send St. James' Park wild.

City were knocking on the door in the second half, with Chancel Mbemba and Jamaal Lascelles each making crucial blocks and Karl Darlow saving superbly from Jesus Navas and Aguero.

Darlow proved to be a brick wall as the last line of defence, saving from De Bruyne and, excellently, from substitute Wilfried Bony late on, though fellow replacement Georginio Wijnaldum was denied by a stunning stop from Joe Hart as the Magpies nearly snatched a winner.

In the end, Newcastle were good value for their point, which sees them move to just two points adrift of safety with four matches of the season remaining.

Here is the story in photos of a good night's work for Rafael Benitez's side.
