Queens Park Rangers are due to face Brighton & Hove Albion later this evening.
Smithies was replaced by Matt Ingram last weekend, and the January signing impressed on his first appearance.
Ingram helped QPR keep a clean-sheet in a 0-0 draw with Cardiff, but it seems that the 23-year-old will drop back out of the team again this evening.
Hasselbaink moved to confirm that Smithies was his number one choice at QPR earlier this week.
"I’ll tell you that one,” said Hasselbaink, when asked who would start in goal this evening. “Alex is back.”
The former Huddersfield Town man has been one of QPR’s star performers since Hasselbaink took charge, with his displays in goal being very solid.
Smithies has taken over from Rob Green in between the sticks for Rangers, and it seems that he will play a crucial part over future seasons at Loftus Road.
Hasselbaink’s QPR side head into their match against Brighton this evening in good form.
The R’s have lost just two of their last 11 matches, and they could move up to ninth place in the Championship table if they are able to beat promotion chasing Brighton.
