Newcastle United face Manchester City at St James' Park tonight.
The Magpies have an opportunity to move out of the relegation zone if they secure a win, but they face a side in very good form, with City recently qualifying for the semi-finals of the Champions League and winning each of their last three Premier League games to move up to third in the table.
Benitez told the Chronicle: “It’s really important for us, not just to get three points but in this case it will be more important than just that.
“If we win the players will see the table and can say: ‘Listen we can do this now’. It will be a massive night and it’s going to be difficult because they are a good team.
“But we have to believe from the beginning until the end that we can do it.”
It seems that Benitez is placing some emphasis on the belief that such a win could create, and Newcastle are helped by getting their first win under the Spaniard at the weekend - beating Swansea City 3-0.
City, of course, are a very different prospect and have a lot of strength all over the field, while possessing one of the league's most deadly finishers in the form of Sergio Aguero. A good defensive performance is a must from Newcastle and they will need to take any chances that come their way if they are to get the result they want.
It is a big ask but if Newcastle manage to get the win they crave, the momentum will certainly be with them.
