Karim Benzema named on Crystal Palace bench for trip to Arsenal

The Real Madrid striker was bizarrely named on the bench for Crystal Palace's trip to Arsenal on Sunday.

Crystal Palace raised a number of eyebrows ahead of their trip to Arsenal on Sunday, seemingly naming Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema on the substitutes bench.

According to The Sun's Dream Team FC, the club posted a picture through its official Twitter account before Sunday's game, appearing to suggest the Frenchman was the last of seven substitutes named for the trip to the Emirates.

While the incident may well be an indication of boss Alan Pardew's ambitions in the transfer market, it is more likely to either be a joke or a bizarre mishap, with the 28-year-old's name later replaced by former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

Either way it sparked plenty of head scratching among many fans, who later saw Connor Wickham lead the line during a hard-earned 1-1 draw at the Emirates.

Meanwhile, Benzema, who looks set not to participate in the upcoming European Championships, was on target for Real during a 5-1 win over Getafe on Saturday.

However, fans at Selhurst Park are unlikely to see him replicate that form in a Crystal Palace shirt any time soon.
