Everton are due to face Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday evening.
Everton face Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday, but Martinez is determined not to let that match take priority over the Merseyside derby.
The Spanish boss believes that Everton need to ensure that they are on the top of their game for both matches, and he has hinted that he will not name a weakened team in midweek to preserve his players for Wembley.
“I don’t think you can switch on and off,” Martinez said.
“You have to perform well before you go to a semi-final. You can’t just say: ‘OK, let’s switch it on. We are going to play well.’ It doesn’t work like that. You have to create a competitive nature in every game you go into.”
Everton took on Southampton in their most recent outing, and Martinez named a altered line-up in that fixture.
Doing so against Liverpool would be a major risk, though, given the emotion that comes with the fixture and the pressure that is on him.
Martinez has been heavily criticised by Everton supporters recently, and a defeat against their main rivals would only increase the calls for him to be sacked.
Martinez’s job could depend on how successful Everton are in the FA Cup, and that means that this week may be a defining one for his future at Goodison Park.
