Aston Villa defender Joleon Lescott infuriated fans with comments made after the club were relegated.
Ian Wright has said he found Joleon Lescott's comments after Aston Villa were relegated impossible to defend.
Speaking to BBC 5 Live's 606 programme on Sunday, Wright said that the former Manchester City defender's comments were wrong, and he was shocked to hear them.
Speaking to The BBC after Villa lost to Manchester United, Lescott said: "Regardless of how we played in patches today, we are relegated. But now it's confirmed, maybe it's a weight off the shoulders and we can give these fans what they deserve, some performances."
Lescott's comments came across as insensitive, and was the latest PR gaffe by the centre-back who was already unpopular with Aston Villa supporters.
Former Premier League strike star Ian Wright said: "He's just got it totally all wrong. It's a disaster. In his mind he's trying to say the right thing but its come out all wrong.
"You can't defend what he said. It was something which was literally a jaw dropping moment. I can't say I feel sorry for him, I just feel like oh my gosh."
It has been a disastrous season all round for Aston Villa, who have managed just three wins from 34 matches, and have lost their last nine league games in a row.
It is hard to see Lescott remaining part of the club next season in the Championship, not because he is above that level of competition, simply that he will not be wanted.
