Vertonghen came back into Tottenham’s team for their last match against Manchester United, after previously being out with injury.
The Belgian defender looked very composed during his first match back against the Red Devils, which Spurs won 3-0.
And, although Kevin Wimmer covered well during Vertonghen’s absence, Lloris admits it is a boost to have the 28-year-old back in their line-up.
“Jan is back and that’s great for the team, he’s a leader and he looked comfortable for his first game in three months,” Lloris said.
“That’s great news. We can congratulate Kevin Wimmer as well. He has played a great role in the last three months and it really shows the team spirit here. It’s all positive.”
Tottenham’s wonderful season has been built on the strength of their back line this season, with the North London side currently having the best defensive record of any team in England’s top flight.
Spurs have conceded just 25 times in 33 matches this season, and that has helped them keep pace with league leaders Leicester City.
Tottenham are currently eight points behind the Foxes, but they could reduce that gap significantly if they are able to beat Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium later this evening.
