Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson outlined on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ on Saturday afternoon (broadcast from 12pm, April 16) the transformation of Tottenham Hotspur attacker Erik Lamela.
“I think he has bought into the manager’s ideas,” said Merson about Lamela while discussing his performances and hard work this season. “He works hard. I think before he was a bit of a luxury player. He drifted in and out of games.”
Lamela suffered an injury in his first season at Tottenham, and during the 2014-15 campaign he struggled with inconsistency.
The Argentina international, who can play as a winger or as an attacking midfielder, has taken his game to a whole new level this season.
The 24-year-old remains a flair player with an eye for a killer pass, but he also works hard and makes important runs.
Lamela has scored four goals and created 57 chances in 29 Premier League appearances so far this season.
The former AS Roma star has a pass accuracy of 77% and a shot accuracy of 53%, and has won nine headers, 31 dribbles and 46 tackles.
Tottenham are second in the Premier League table at the moment with 65 points from 33 matches, eight points behind leaders Leicester City.
