Swansea boss makes bold claim over Newcastle’s survival hopes

St James Park Newcastle

Swansea City lost 3-0 at Newcastle United.

Swansea City boss Francesco Guidolin says his side are not safe yet while backing Newcastle United to preserve their Premier League status come the end of the season, the BBC report.s

The Magpies boosted their survival hopes with a much-needed victory over Swansea at St. James’ Park.

As a result, Rafa Benitez’s side have moved to within three points of safety while Swansea drop down to 15th spot in the table, ten points ahead of Sunderland and the bottom three.

Despite sitting on 40 points, Guidolin assures reporters his side aren’t safe just yet while backing Newcastle to pull themselves out of the bottom three following their encounter with the Magpies.

“I think Newcastle deserved to win. In the second half we had situations and possibilities to score. It's a bad day for us. We have to look ahead to the next match away to Leicester,” Guidolin told the BBC.

“It's difficult. But we are not safe mathematically. I think Newcastle will be in the Premier League next season. Rafael Benitez is a good manager."

Benitez has already proven himself to be a top quality manager, yet his job of turning Newcastle around and saving them from the drop is undoubtedly among the toughest of his career.

The Magpies have spent most of the season in the bottom three, and with only a handful of games remaining they may need another three victories before the season is done.

It’s a case of two from three involving Norwich City, Sunderland and Newcastle, and following another weekend of crazy results, it’s still anybody’s guess as to who will join Aston Villa in the Championship.
