Eric Black praises outstanding Aston Villa players, believes some are ready for the Championship

The Aston Villa interim boss was impressed with Villa's performance despite suffering relegation.

Aston Villa have been relegated to the Championship after losing to Manchester United 1-0 in the Premier League today.

The Midlands side went down to a Marcus Rashford goal to finally put fans out of their misery in what has been a poor season for the club both on and off the pitch.

Villa have got through two managers this season – with Tim Sherwood and Remi Garde both getting the sack this season.

Currently Eric Black is working as the interim boss and he had this reaction after the game. He told BBC Sport that the mood was low in the camp but that he was pleased with the performance today:

"It's a mood of disappointment. What I will say is today I thought they were outstanding. Energy levels, desire to stick to the plan. But for some misfortune I thought we could have got a draw.

“Since I arrived the boys have been outstanding. I know there has been criticism, some of it deserved but today they made a step back for the supporters and showed there was some pride for the shirt.”

He went on to discuss next season. Black believes that there are players in the current Villa squad who are capable of playing at Championship level:

"There are players in there capable of playing in the Championship."

Villa certainly have some players in the current squad and out on loan that can handle the second tier but a mass overhaul will still be needed if Villa are to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
