Liverpool’s reward for their epic 5-4 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund in the last eight is a semi-final clash with Spanish side Villarreal, who are enjoying a fantastic campaign in La Liga.
It promises to be another special encounter for the Reds, and Villarreal boss Marcelino has warned Jurgen Klopp’s side that they have every intention of reaching the final in Basel.
“Liverpool have a great history and play in unique surroundings. We will have a wonderful challenge. We have got this far on merit, and now we want to go one further,” he was quoted by Tuttomercatoweb.
Liverpool have enjoyed a terrific run in Europe thus far, and nobody can say they have had it easy as Augsburg, Manchester United and Dortmund have all proven tough challenges.
For long periods last night at Anfield, it appeared that the Reds’ run in Europe was over, especially as the Bundesliga side led both 2-0 and 3-1 on the night with Liverpool needing three goals.
But in dramatic fashion, the Merseyside outfit rallied and produced another historic comeback, as defender Dejan Lovren scored a last-minute winner to send Klopp’s men through with a 4-3 victory.
Villarreal will prove a different challenge for Liverpool, and they should not be underestimated having beaten both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid in La Liga this season plus Napoli in the Europa League.
