Report: Rafael Benitez has told friends he wants to stay at Newcastle United for the long-term

Rafael Benitez has failed to win any of his first four matches in charge of Newcastle United.

According to a report on the Daily Star, Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has told his friends that he wants to stay at St. James’ Park for the long-term.

Benitez has a clause in his contract which means that he is free to leave Newcastle, should they be relegated.

However, the Spaniard is believed to be keen to remain on Tyneside if he is given the opportunity.

Benitez reportedly feels that he can change Newcastle’s fortunes, if he is given time to work on making changes.

His future now depends on whether Mike Ashley will be happy to continue to fund his wages, without top flight football.

Benitez has reportedly signed a deal worth £5 million a year at St. James’ Park, meaning he would be the highest paid boss in the Championship, if the club do go down.

Newcastle are currently six points adrift of safety, with time running out for them to escape the drop.

The Magpies’ next fixture comes at home against Swansea City, and any result other than a victory would be a huge disappointment.
