Newcastle are currently six points adrift of safety, and their chances of survival are becoming slimmer by the game.
The Magpies have failed to win any of their first four matches under Benitez’s stewardship, and they have not triumphed for seven games in total.
The Tynesiders were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Southampton in their last outing, but Benitez is still convinced that his team have what it takes to avoid the drop.
“Sometimes when you aren’t performing at the level people are expecting and not winning, we can talk about character and spirit,” Benitez said
“What I can talk about is what I see in the training sessions.
“The team is doing really well. Maybe they have been doing that all season.
“But now is the time to show that quality and character on the pitch.”
Newcastle have just six games remaining to escape from trouble, and they will need to transform their performances if they are to accumulate enough points to escape the drop.
The only positive for the Magpies is that four of their remaining fixtures are at St. James’ Park.
The first match of Newcastle’s crucial run-in comes against Swansea City tomorrow, and any result other than a victory would be seriously damaging to their survival chances.
