Photos: Brian McDermott's managerial reign at Leeds United - Including 6-0 derby thrashing, FA Cup upset and Cellino controversy

The Reading manager returns to Elland Road this weekend.

Brian McDermott takes his Reading side to Elland Road this weekend to take on Leeds United in his first trip to Elland Road since returning to the hot-seat at the Madejski Stadium.

McDermott joined Leeds in April 2013 and had a very eventful time at Leeds.

He had an initially impressive start to life at Leeds but also suffered some memorable mishaps. The 6-0 derby thrashing at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday and the defeat to Rochdale in the FA Cup will certainly not be fond memories.

He also brought in the likes of Luke Murphy, Matt Smith and Scott Wootton – players who all had mixed success at the club.

Then came Massimo Cellino.

The Italian looked to take over the club in January 2014 and pre-emptively appeared to sack McDermott with the full intention of replacing him with Giancluca Festa – as reported by The Mirror.

In the end McDermott was reinstated, with Leeds beating local rivals Huddersfield Town 5-1 under the control of his assistant Nigel Gibbs in his absence.

McDermott, who also signed Connor Wickham and Jack Butland on loan, left the club at the end of May and became the first managerial casualty of Cellino’s controversial reign at the club.

Here are some of the best pictures from McDermott’s time at the club, from promising beginnings, FA Cup debacles and his controversial end.
