Shinji Kagawa was a played for who there were high hopes at Manchester United when he signed in 2012.
The Japanese international did win the Premier League with the Red Devils in his first season, but did not nail down a regular place in the starting XI, and only made a bit-part contribution towards that success.
The next season was David Moyes' first in charge, and he was unable to kick on, as the team's form dipped dramatically.
He was then sold during Louis van Gaal's second month as manager, returning to former club Borussia Dortmund.
Kagawa has been back on form this season, scoring seven times and providing six assists in the Bundesliga. Last night he was in action against United's Premier League rivals Liverpool.
Despite his best efforts he ended up on the losing side, with his old manager Jurgen Klopp leading Liverpool to a 5-4 aggregate win at Anfield.
Kagawa featured for 77 minutes, taken off shortly before Mamadou Sakho scored an equaliser.
He had two shots on target during the match, completing 90 per cent of his passes, while also contributing defensively, making three tackles and four clearances.
United fans were impressed with his display, and took to Twitter to wonder where it all went wrong for him at United...
Kagawa is one player that I still wonder why he couldn't play at #MUFC— Semakula Bashir (@semakula) April 14, 2016
Shame we didn't know what to do with Kagawa. Lovely to watch. Smooth. #mufc— Tudur 'Tate' Jones (@TateJones10) April 14, 2016
Can someone please explain to me why Shinji Kagawa was sold? #MUFC— Tom (@SillyMidTom) April 14, 2016
Liverpool would not have won tonight if David Moyes hadn't ruined Shinji Kagawa during his time at #mufc— baramenyn (@Baramenyn) April 14, 2016
Watching the match, can't believe we sold Kagawa and bought Mata #mufc— Nigel Craig (@CraigNigel) April 14, 2016
We never should have sold Kagawa. World class player who never got his chance to shine. #MUFC— Phil (@LittlePhilz) April 14, 2016
