Gallery: Poignancy, emotion and passion combine as Liverpool stun Borussia Dortmund at Anfield

Liverpool's 4-3 win over Borussia Dortmund takes them through to the last four of the Europa League.

A truly stunning thing took place at Anfield last night. A night that started off with poignancy as both Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund fans paid tribute to the 96 Liverpool fans that lost their lives at Hillsborough at an FA Cup semi-final 27 years ago, was followed by a wonderful spectacle on the field.

It will go down as one of the greatest European nights Liverpool have ever seen, and that says a lot. Borussia Dortmund showed why they are one of the most talked about sides in Europe as they were wonderful the opening eight minutes as they raced into a two goal lead through Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

It would last until half-time as Liverpool would try and fight back. Divock Origi would strike just after the half-time break only for Marco Reus to restore Dortmund's advantage. It surely had to be over then? Nah.

Joe Allen's stock would grow as he was introduced into the action along with Daniel Sturridge. Philippe Coutinho would strike for his 11th goal of the season - he would later deliver a poor corner that somehow found its way in via the head of Mamadou Sakho, right after Dortmund had a mini team meeting - presumably to say get a grip. That didn't work.

They were hoping for the tie to fizzle out, then Dejan Lovren joined his centre-back partner on the scoresheet with his first goal of the season. Several players written into Anfield folklore as a result. This is a night that will be remembered for decades, and here we have one or two of the best images.
