Villa’s relegation can be mathematically confirmed this weekend, if they fail to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford, but Black wants to prolong the inevitable.
Although the Claret and Blues’ are certain to face the drop this season, Black wants his side to show some pride and he has been encouraged by their efforts in the training ground.
"I have to be honest - watching our players out there in training - I am relishing it," he said.
"I am looking forward to getting there. Let's surprise a few people.
"In the last 10 days the lads have been very good. They have applied themselves in training. I couldn't fault them.”
Villa are currently 15 points adrift of safety, and they have won just three Premier League matches all season.
The Villains have lacked the heart required to get themselves out of trouble, and it would be a major upset if they were to pick up a result against the Red Devils.
Louis van Gaal’s side head into the match having won their last fixture 2-1 against West Ham United to make it into the FA Cup semi-final, so they have momentum on their side.
If United are to beat Villa, as expected, they could close the gap on the top four to just one point.
