Discipline now key for Arsenal, says defender Per Mertesacker

The Gunners are targeting a strong end to a disappointing season.

Discipline is now key for Arsenal in the end of season run-in, Per Mertesacker has told the club’s official website.

The Gunners are now seemingly set to end the season without any silverware, having been knocked out of the cup competitions and fallen out of the title race.

Mathematically they have a chance of catching leaders Leicester City, but with the two sides currently 13 points apart, that seems unlikely at this stage of the campaign.

Nonetheless, there is no reason for them not to end the season strongly and give their fans something to cheer about after a disappointing year.

And Mertesacker says that discipline will be key to them finishing as well as they possibly can.

“[We need] discipline,” he told Arsenal Player.

“We lacked a bit of that desperation, even when 2-0 up at West Ham, to defend and get everyone behind the ball. To come back to that level is absolutely important in the Premier League.”

“We want to win every single match now, to put the teams in front of us under pressure. We have got the belief we can win every single one and that is the task from now on: to concentrate on the next one.”

Even if Arsenal do go on a winning run between now and the end of the season, it would only be a superficial cover up of their issues this season.

There is no denying that this should have been the season in which they properly challenged for the title as their rivals all struggled for their best form.

Instead both Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City took up the mantle to leave Gunners fans disappointed once more and Arsene Wenger answering serious questions.
