Everton could miss out on teenage Coventry City striker Bassala Sambou, with Newcastle United emerging as contenders for his signature.
A report in the Coventry Telegraph on Monday claimed Sambou was on his way to Goodison Park, having turned down a new deal at the Ricoh Arena.
However, the Liverpool Echo have now claimed that a deal is far from done, with manager Roberto Martinez still to see him in the flesh.
Sambou has scored 25 goals for the Sky Blues' Under-18 and Under-21 sides this season and is out of contract at the end of the campaign.
But Coventry will be entitled to compensation for the 18-year-old, who has been at the club since the age of 11.
Everton have already signed Swiss striker Shani Tarashaj ahead of next season and boast an excellent record of blooding young talents, with Ross Barkley, John Stones and Brendan Galloway all breaking into the Toffees' first-team in recent campaigns.
On the other hand, on-loan Newcastle striker Adam Armstrong is set to return to St. James' Park from Coventry this summer and Sambou may wish to follow his teammate North, rather than move to Merseyside.
