Paul Merson says he is breaking season habit in predicting Stoke v Tottenham

Paul Merson says he believes Tottenham are so good that he believes they will beat Stoke at the Britannia, where he never feels

Paul Merson has told SkySports that he is breaking a season long habit by picking against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.

The former Arsenal midfielder says that he has such strong belief in Tottenham Hotspur getting all three points that he believes Mark Hughes' Stoke side will suffer defeat.

Merson makes weekly predictions for Premier League matches, and picking Stoke at home is one of the few 'rules' he sticks to each week.

Not this time around. He has predicted Tottenham Hotspur to beat Stoke 3-1, in a game which is to be played on Monday evening.

He said: "I never go against Stoke at home. They are a very good team in front of their own fans but for me, Tottenham win. I really fancy an away win. I have been impressed with Spurs; they are a good, good team."

While Stoke are outsiders for the European places, and don't have a huge amount to pay for, Tottenham are in the opposite scenario, battling for the Premier League title.

They are seven points behind league leaders Leicester City, but with the Foxes playing a dangerous West Ham this weekend, if they slip up then this game will have even more importance to Tottenham, yet even if Claudio Ranieri's side win, it is a game Spurs cannot afford to lose.
