To sign Ousmane Dembele, Tottenham might have to loan him back to Rennes for a year

Will Tottenham Hotspur be able to sign Ousmane Dembele this summer?

Tottenham Hotspur could be adding another talented youngster to their line-up, with France Football reporting yesterday that negotiations have taken place over Ousmane Dembele's signature.

Spurs are claimed to have stepped ahead of European giants like Bayern Munich and Barcelona in the race for Dembele, although Rennes are planning talks with other teams, as they seek to secure the best deal.

As part of their attempts to do so, France Football report that Rennes ideal situation is that they would cash in on Dembele for big money, but secure his rights on loan for another season.

This may be far from ideal, but it could be one way where Tottenham's willingness to be patient gives them an edge over their more prestigious European rivals who have more money to throw around.

Talksport report that Rennes will hold out for a fee in excess of £30 million, which is the type of figure which makes it very hard to part with a player on loan for a year after shelling out that amount of money.

Tottenham allowed Dele Alli to remain at MK Dons on loan for six months after signing him, but that was very different given that he cost just £5 million.

If a deal could be financially structured so that the majority of the Dembele money would only be released once his year back on loan at Rennes is over, then it would be more tempting for Spurs to commit to.

The closest deal in type approved by a Premier League club in recent seasons was Liverpool signing Divock Origi from Lille in 2014 for £10 million, and allowing him to remain at the Ligue 1 side.

In this case Rennes hold all the cards, with Europe's biggest clubs queuing at their door for Dembele, and if Spurs are unwilling to cede to their demands, they might just find another club who are.

Tottenham just have to decide whether Dembele, 18, with 12 goals and five assists in 21 Ligue 1 appearances, is worth it.
