The Nancy keeper is yet to play a senior fixture but has been on the bench for his club.
Reports are suggesting that Sunderland could again be about to delve into the French market for a new signing this summer.
Sunderland snapped up Lamine Kone and Wahbi Khazri from French football in January and now it seems that The Black Cats are keen on the signature of Alexandre Menay of Nancy - as reported by the Chronicle.
The 19-year-old is currently a back-up goalkeeper at the Ligue 2 side so the interest certainly appears to have emerged from nowhere.
Sunderland are also well stocked in the goalkeeping department with Italian Vito Mannone and England under-21 international Jordan Pickford currently both with the club.
But it would seem that Menay has done something to impress Sunderland, with the talk of a potential summer deal for the player gathering pace.
The report claims that Sunderland have sent scouts to watch the player, who is currently on semi-professional terms with Nancy, train with the reserves.
Menay is still waiting to play his first professional game of football with Nancy so is certainly an unknown quantity.
Sunderland fans will hope that he might be a diamond in the rough if he does make the switch.
