He had scored goals for fun at previous club Mamelodi Sundowns and it seemed the South African international was ready to take England by storm.
That never quite happened. In his two years at Leeds he scored just 11 goals and struggled to hold down a regular place in competition with the likes of Tony Yeboah, Brian Deane, Rod Wallace and Noel Whelan.
This week the former Leeds star has named his all-time five-a-side football team to Soccer Laduma.
Not one for being modest Masinga included himself in the team with four fellow South Africans. Former Blackburn Rovers and West Ham striker Benni McCarthy made the cut along with Doctor Khumalo and former Orlando Pirates star John Moeti – and another former Leeds United star.
The player in question is, of course, ‘The Chief’ Lucas Radebe.
Now a Leeds United legend the centre-back only joined from Kaizer Chiefs in the same summer as Masinga to keep his Bafana Bafana team-mate happy in Yorkshire.
But he went on to outshine the striker and become club captain and remains a hero at the club.
