Rangers will finally return to the Scottish Premiership next season.

Former manager Walter Smith suggests Rangers will carry a bitterness about them following their demotion to division three which held help fuel motivation next season, the Daily Record report.

Gers were heavily punished for financial irregularities and were subsequently demoted to the Scottish third division - a decision which sparked plenty of controversy and bitterness at the time.

However, after four seasons out of the top-flight, the Ibrox club are to return next season as Mark Warburton’s side recently secured the first division title and ensuing promotion to the Premiership.

Speaking on their return, Smith still feels the demotion was harsh on Rangers and suggests they can use the bitterness of their punishment as a motivation tool to spark a title challenge next season.

"I think it [ill feeling] will always be there. There was no necessity for Rangers to be put down into the Third Division,” Smith was quoted as saying by the Daily Record.

"I think that's the thing that will always stay in Scottish football, I think there will be a bitterness in the Rangers ranks that it happened. It will be a massive motivation for the club, it would be for me.”

"There's no doubt it was the wrong move in my eyes. Scottish football's been worse off and a lot of the teams who were happy to see Rangers go down there have suffered.”

"How can they forget what happened to them? They can't forget that. Nobody can forget."

Rangers have enjoyed a terrific campaign under Mark Warburton, and after winning the Petrofac Training Cup last weekend they now have a shot at another domestic trophy in regards to the Scottish Cup.

Old Firm rivals Celtic stand in their way, with the two clubs set to meet at Hampden Park this weekend.

Regardless of what happens, Rangers will be excited to return to the top-flight next season and talk of challenging the Hoops for the Premiership title is already being discussed as a reasonable target.
