Sky Sports pundit shares what he finds baffling about Newcastle midfielder

Neil McCann suggests that Newcastle United will get relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

Former Rangers and Southampton winger Neil McCann has suggested to Sky Sports that Georginio Wijnaldum should be played in an advanced midfield position for Newcastle United.

Wijnaldum is one of the best players in the current Newcastle squad, but his performances in recent matches have been disappointing.

The 25-year-old is at his best when deployed in an attacking midfield role, and McCann believes that this is the best way forward for the Netherlands international.

The former Scotland international, though, has suggested that Newcastle will get relegated to the Premier League at the end of the season.

“They have a squad that is capable but some of the decisions - like Georginio Wijnaldum playing in a deeper role - baffle me,” McCann told Sky Sports while analysing Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat to Southampton away from home at St. Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

“He has scored nine goals in an advanced position so I don't understand playing someone with that energy in a holding role. I don't think they will get out of trouble.”

Wijnaldum has scored nine goals and created 43 chances in 32 Premier League appearances for Newcastle so far this season.

The former Feyenoord and PSV star has a pass accuracy of 85% and a shot accuracy of 69%, and has won 21 headers, 48 dribbles and 26 tackles.

Newcastle are second from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with 25 points from 32 matches.
