Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen has praised his replacement Kevin Wimmer.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has praised the man who stepped in to deputise for him during his spell out with injury.
Kevin Wimmer filled Vertonghen's spot in central defence after he went down with a knee injury in late January, and made the most of his opportunity.
He came in under a lot of pressure with Spurs playing so well at the time, but Wimmer ensured that Vertonghen's absence was not felt.
Vertonghen returned from injury at the weekend against Manchester United, a big game to return in, with Kevin Wimmer switching back to the bench.
Speaking to the club's official website, Vertonghen praised Mauricio Pochettino for being willing to throw him back in alongside Toby Alderweireld, and praised Austrian international Wimmer's performances.
He said: "I have to thank the gaffer for his confidence in me, because Kevin has been outstanding, together with Toby they’ve been unbelievable, they kept the run going like we were doing until I was out against Palace.
"They kept it going, so big compliments to them. Toby and I have been playing together for such a long time and with the full-backs, Hugo, Eric just in front, Mousa as well (coming back) it’s like a warm bath. I’ve known them such a long time and they helped me through the game."
It was a big call for Pochettino to put Vertonghen back in at such a big moment with Spurs knowing a defeat could be the end for their title challenge, but he showed he knows his players perfectly, with the Belgian centre-backs combining to deliver a clean sheet in a 3-0 win.
