Birmingham boss Gary Rowett claims Ryan Shotton looks like a Premier League player

The defender is currently on loan at St Andrew's from Derby.

Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett has claimed that Ryan Shotton has many of the attributes required to be a Premier League footballer again in the future, the Birmingham Mail reports.

The versatile defender is on loan with the Championship side from Derby County but has recently stated that he would like to stay at St Andrew's beyond the duration of his loan spell (via Mail). And Rowett has seemingly confirmed that the feeling is mutual after discussing what the 27-year-old brings to the side.

"Ryan is one that has played in the Premier League there and he does look like a Premier League centre half in terms of his stature, physique, pace and power and it’s just having the opportunity to prove that," he told the Mail.

While the Blues boss is a big admirer of the former Stoke man, Shotton has struggled to find regular football since joining the club towards the end of the January transfer window.

His appearance against Reading at the weekend was just his fourth since leaving the iPro Stadium, but on the basis of his performance against the Royals, it seems likely that he will be given several more opportunities in the near future.

As well as getting Birmingham's second goal - his first for the club - in the 2-0 win, he was able to help the side keep a clean sheet to help keep their slim play-off hopes alive heading into the final six games of the season.
