Crooks was impressed with the performance of Antonio for West Ham against Arsenal at the weekend and has included him in his BBC Premier League Team of the Week.
In the 3-3 draw with Arsenal at the Boleyn Ground on Saturday afternoon, the former Nottingham Forest winger took one shot, had a pass accuracy of 80%, created three chances, put in seven crosses, attempted three dribbles, won 67% of his tackles, and made three interceptions, four clearances and four blocks.
Antonio has shown his versatility in recent months, playing well in a wing-back role, and Crooks, who has also included West Ham hat-trick hero Andy Carroll in his BBC Premier League Team of the Week, has been impressed.
“This lad has done a wonderful job for West Ham this season,” the Englishman told BBC Sport about Antonio. “In recent months, Antonio has gone from an attacking midfield role to a wing-back and done both jobs wonderfully well.
“Apart from the fact that he can play in any position down the right-hand flank, he has provided manager Slaven Bilic with power and strength in a defensive position, something that they have lacked all season.
Antonio joined West Ham from Championship side Forest in the summer of 2015. The winger struggled to get into the Hammers’ team in the opening weeks of the season and took a while to adapt to the Premier League.
In recent months, though, the Englishman has been superb and has established himself as an important player in Bilic’s side.
Antonio has scored six goals and created 16 chances in 20 Premier League appearances for West Ham so far this season.
The former Sheffield Wednesday man has a pass accuracy of 66% and a shot accuracy of 45%, and has won 30 headers, 32 dribbles and 21 tackles.
