Alan Shearer makes a prediction about Rafael Benitez

Newcastle United are in danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

Alan Shearer has written on Coral.co.uk that Rafael Benitez will leave Newcastle United if he fails to keep them in the Premier League.

The Magpies are second from bottom in the league table at the moment and are in real danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

Newcastle legend Shearer believes that Benitez will not be in charge of the team if they are playing in the Championship next season.

“I watched the Southampton vs Newcastle game on Saturday and for the first 45 minutes they didn’t show up again,” the former Newcastle striker wrote on Coral.co.uk.

“It looks like they are going down without a fight. When they did start to play with 20 minutes to go, it was too late. They have it all to do and with performances like that, you can’t see them getting out of it.

“If they do go down, I would be amazed if Benitez was to stay in the Championship. I can’t see that happening at all.”

Benitez is a top-class manager, and has been in charge of big clubs such as Real Madrid, Liverpool and Chelsea.

The Spaniard is too good to manage in the Championship, and it is very likely that he will leave the Magpies in the summer if he fails to keep them in the Premier League.

The former Valencia coach will probably get offers from big clubs in the summer, and even if he does not, it is hard to see him manage a team in the second tier of English football.

Newcastle will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Swansea City at St. James’ Park in the Premier League.
