According to GianlucaDiMarzio, Manchester United are in talks to sign Kostas Manolas.
The Italian report claims that Chelsea are keen on signing the Roma defender but United have also shown their intentions, holding a meeting with his agent in the past few days as they seek a deal.
The Greece international defender has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, with a host of clubs over the past 12 months accredited with having an interest in him.
Manolas has been a regular for Roma since joining the club, and this season he has featured in 30 Serie A matches, averaging two interceptions and 4.5 effective clearances per encounter.
Renowned for his passing ability and strength in the air, the 24-year-old has become one of the leading centre-backs during his time in the Italian capital and interest in his services comes as little surprise.
United are not exactly light in numbers at the back, yet question marks remain over the quality of their defence with holding midfielder Daley Blind regularly slotting into a centre-back position.
Manolas’s form has been a key factor behind Roma’s charge for a top three spot and ensuing Champions League football this season, while in contrast defensive frailties have hindered United.
Question marks remains as to whether United boss Louis van Gaal will still be in charge at Old Trafford next season, but regardless of who the manager is, there is no doubt the squad needs major strengthening.
