Former player Mido has suggested on Twitter that a Middlesbrough promotion coupled with Sunderland and Newcastle United going down would make him a very happy man.
North East duo Newcastle and Sunderland edged closer to Premier League relegation this past weekend following defeats to Southampton and Leicester City respectively.
With just a handful of games remaining, the Magies sit six points adrift of Norwich City and safety while a Sunderland side who are winless in five are only two points better off than their rivals.
The Wear-Tyne derby is looking increasingly like being a Championship fixture next season, and to rub salt in to the wounds, the duo could well be replaced by promotion-chasing Middlesbrough in the top-flight.
Following Boro’s 1-0 wino over Preston North End on Saturday, Aitor Karanka’s men moved four points clear of Brighton in third, prompting former player Mido to make his feelings known on Twitter.
Mido, 33, spent three years at the Riverside Stadium with Boro, joining the club from Tottenham Hotspur.
While he was not exactly a great hit on Teesside, he still holds an affiliation with the club and his latest remarks on Twitter show his backing for Boro in their quest for promotion to the Premier League.
After spending a good number of years as the North East’s third best team, next season it’s looking like being a different story as both Sunderland and Newcastle are odds on favourites to go down.
