Former West Ham United and Manchester City winger Trevor Sinclair suggested on MOTD2 Extra on Sunday afternoon (broadcast from 12:15pm, April 10) that Steven Taylor should remain at Newcastle United next season.
Taylor has been at Newcastle his entire professional career so far, but he is out of contract at the end of the season.
The 30-year-old defender has not been playing well this season and performed poorly against Southampton away from home at St. Mary’s Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
The Magpies lost the game 3-1, and remain second from bottom in the league table and in serious danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.
Taylor’s future at Newcastle is in doubt, but Sinclair believes that the centre-back should be part of the squad next season.
“Steven Taylor didn’t play well yesterday,” said Sinclair on MOTD2 Extra on Sunday afternoon (broadcast from 12:15pm, April 10).
“I think he will be the first to admit that, but he is a player that I look at in that squad and I think, ‘You know what? You would want him next year’. He didn’t show that yesterday.”
Taylor is not a great defender, but he has done the job the best he can despite his injury problems.
Perhaps in the Championship, the Englishman would be a good player, but it is clear that for Newcastle to progress in the Premier League in the coming years, they need better and younger centre-backs.
