Hull City are currently in fourth place in the Championship table.
The Tigers were in fabulous form over the early part of the campaign, and they looked set to finish in one of the top two spots a few months back.
However, a terrible run of form has seen them fall nine points behind the top two and Pearce believes that they will now be relying on winning the play offs to be promoted.
“Now it is too far,” the former Nottingham Forest boss said. “They are on a difficult run. Their best opportunity will be thought the play offs, but it’s always nice to go into them with momentum and I’m not sure Hull have that on their side at the moment.”
Hull’s latest failure came against Huddersfield Town, with Steve Bruce’s side only being able to pick up a 2-2 draw.
The Tigers showed great fighting spirit to come from behind twice to claim a point, but the draw does little for their promotion chances.
Hull have now won just once in their last eight Championship matches, and they will need to regain some momentum over the remainder of the season.
As things stand, Hull are set to meet Darren Wassall’s resurgent Derby County side in the play offs.
