The Tottenham Hotspur centre-back has praised his young teammates.
Spurs went into the match 10 points behind Premier League leaders Leicester City, but they refused to lie down and three quick-fire goals in the second half gave Mauricio Pochettino’s side a comfortable victory.
Dele Alli opened the scoring for Tottenham with Toby Alderweireld and Erik Lamela also finding the back of the net to embarrass United’s defence and prove just how far the North London club have come this season.
Vertonghen made his return from injury in the match and speaking afterwards, he explained why the fans love this Tottenham side.
“They can identify with everyone in this team, young guys, mainly English but even foreigners; they can identify with them because they work so hard and they do everything to make them proud,” the Belgian international said.
“That’s what they want to see and that’s why this team is so good.”
Vertonghen had missed the last 15 games in all competitions due to a knee injury, but he showed his class against United and will feature more often than not between now and the end of the campaign.
