The former Liverpool and Rangers midfielder has named Payet in his Premier League Team of the Season, but he has claimed that he will need to maintain his current level.
“My reservation about Payet is simple enough,” Souness wrote in The Times. “Why has he not got 50 French caps to his name and a bag of winners’ medals? He’s 29. What that tells you is that he hasn’t played at his current level consistently throughout his career.
“But some players mature late. Payet creates magic and is one of the best footballers I’ve seen at set-pieces. He has a certain strut, an attitude on the pitch, which I like. His main challenge is to remain at this level.”
Payet enjoyed a great season for Marseille during the 2014-15 campaign and is doing brilliantly for West Ham at the moment.
The France international attacking midfielder has scored nine goals and created 92 chances in 25 Premier League appearances so far this season.
Souness, though, does have a point about Payet not being consistent enough so far in his career, and it will be a challenge for the 29-year-old to play this well next season.
West Ham are sixth in the Premier League table at the moment with 52 points from 32 matches. Slaven Bilic’s side are five points behind Manchester City, who are currently fourth in the standings and occupy the final Champions League spot.
