Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino gives reasons behind bringing Jan Vertonghen back

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen made his first appearance since January.

Mauricio Pochettino has told Sky Sports Super Sunday, which was broadcast on 10th April, that Kevin Wimmer was very unlucky not to be selected for Tottenham Hotspur’s match against Manchester United.

Wimmer has stepped into Spurs’ defence and performed admirably over recent months, but he was dropped back to the substitutes’ bench earlier today.

With Jan Vertonghen returning from injury, the Belgian defender came straight back into Spurs’ side.

And Pochettino said: “We need to decide to pick between both players, who are very good.

“The difference is Jan has spent a lot of time at the club, he is a leader of the team. Kevin is very young. We have signed him to improve his game. He has played a lot and played very well.

“But it is always unlucky for someone and when 12 players deserve to play it’s hard.”

Pochettino will argue that his decision was vindicated, as Spurs absolutely dominated against the Red Devils.

Tottenham looked very secure as they picked up a 3-0 victory over United.

Vertonghen slotted straight back into the side, and he linked up brilliantly with centre-back partner Toby Alderweireld throughout the match.

Vertonghen now seems likely to keep his place in Spurs’ starting line-up for the rest of the season, as Pochettino’s side aim to catch Leicester City at the top of the Premier League table.
