According to a report from The Sun, Aston Villa are hoping to bring in Norwich City midfielder Gary O'Neil as their first signing this summer.
Villa's 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon means that they are all but relegated, and it was only Norwich's 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace which saved them from the drop.
Currently under the stewardship of interim boss Eric Black, Villa will be appointing a long-term manager this summer - but the recruitment of players may be starting early.
The Sun report that Villa have lined up Norwich City midfielder Gary O'Neil as their first summer signing, with the 32-year-old set to leave Carrow Road on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Veteran midfielder O'Neil, who can play centrally or out wide, has made 22 Premier League appearances for the Canaries this season, but 14 of those have been starts, and whether Alex Neil's men stay up or go down, it seems that O'Neil could be on his way out.
The former Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers ace has an incredible record of winning promotion through the Championship play-offs, having won the final in 2012, 2014 and 2015, with West Ham, QPR and Norwich respectively.
That proven track record of promotion back to the Premier League will sit well with Villa, who will need experienced Championship heads to get them back to the top flight, and on a free transfer, O'Neil could be a smart signing - even if he does turn 33 in May.
