Newcastle United are currently six points adrift of safety.
Manager Rafael Benitez has suggested that the only positive remaining from Newcastle United’s season is that they have four home matches left.
Newcastle have been abject on their travels this season, and their poor away form continued yesterday as they were beaten 3-1 by Southampton by St. Mary’s.
The Magpies never threatened to get into the match against Southampton, with the defeat leaving their chances of survival looking incredibly slim.
Newcastle are currently six points adrift of safety, with just six games remaining in their season.
Benitez admits that there is not much reason for optimism at St. James' Park, but he does feel that the fact Newcastle have so many home games remaining could work in his side’s favour.
"We have to take something positive but I don’t see many positive things today," Benitez said. "The performance of the team away has been really poor all season and the only positive is that we now have four games at home."
Newcastle have been better at home this season than they have been away, but they will have to finish the season very strongly to have any chance of avoiding the drop.
Benitez's side are set to host Swansea City, Manchester City, Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur at St. James’ Park before the end of the campaign.
