Newcastle United’s season went from bad to worse on Saturday when they lost 3-1 to Southampton at St Mary’s.
First-half goals from Shane Long and Graziano Pelle were followed by a Victor Wanyama strike 10 minutes into the second period, ensuring Andros Townsend’s 65th-minute effort was nothing more than a consolation.
The result means Newcastle are six points below the safety line with just six matches remaining, and if they continue to play like this recently appointed manager Rafa Benitez will not be able to stop the rot in time.
The vast majority of Newcastle players came in for criticism after the final whistle, one of whom was midfielder Vurnon Anita.
The 27-year-old has been a regular for Newcastle this season, much to the bemusement of many Magpies fans who feel he does not do enough to warrant his place.
Others are less scathing and after the match we took to Twitter to see what fans thought of Anita’s latest performance, with a selection found below:
How bad is Vurnon Anita ... We signed him and fell off the edge of the planet— The Gallowgate end (@Nufc_Forever) April 9, 2016
#nufc Anita may be poor player but fair play to the lad for trying. More than can be said for a LOT of players today. Gini Sissoko Perez etc— Tony Adams (@Toontone100) April 9, 2016
@NUFC_Index Anita a left back never! Taylor is shocking never a prem player! Darlow needs the experience! Shambles over paid players— carl (@Ccsh007Carl) April 9, 2016
A half fit Paul Dummett is better than a fully fit Vurnon Anita (at left back)...#NUFC— Adam Little (@AdamLittle_NUFC) April 9, 2016
I find incredible that a club NUFC only got Anita play left full back ! He cant even kick the ball with his left... https://t.co/eaTUWXIClv— Glenn Milner (@healthcoachglen) April 9, 2016
